ATV Report
Bayfield County ATV Open 06/23/2008
All trails on the Washburn Ranger District are open. Trails south of US 2 are rough and have numerous wet areas. Due to a sink hole, one section of the Iron River Trail (Trail 31) near the junction of the Moquah Spur trail (Trail 63) is being temporarily re-routed. Riders should follow the ATV detour in this area and use Forest Road 429 as an alternate route for this section. Grading activities are ongoing so please be alert for heavy equipment operating on the trails. The remainder of the Bayfield County trails are in good shape.

This report will be updated as conditions change.

User Information
Bayfield County passed a sound and speed limit for all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles. The ordinance prohibits noise emitted from an ATV exceeding 96 decibels and a 24 hour speed limit of 40 miles per hour. Excessive noise levels on local trails hurt the ATV program, generate complaints from the public and create a bad image for all ATV operators.

All ATVs not registered in Wisconsin are required to obtain and display a nonresident ATV trail pass in addition to your home state registration. This trail pass must be permanently attached and visible near the forward half of the ATV. Cost is $18 and can be purchased where fishing licenses are sold.

US Forest visitors are reminded that some trailheads require daily use fees [can be purchased on site] or an annual pass. Remember, ATV usage is limited to designated roads and trails. No overland “cross country” travel is allowed. Crossing or going around berms, gates or other road closure devices is prohibited. Vehicle travel on ATV trails is also prohibited. If hunting off of ski or ATV trails, remember to always be sure of your location and do not shoot across or towards the trail.
